Changing a Tire or Inner Tube
Things you will need:
- New tire or inner tube (16 inch if moped type, 20 inch if bicycle type)
- Bicycle tire lever(s)
- Pump or air compressor
- Bike jack or stand (optional but helpful)
- 13 mm wrench or spanner for wheel nuts removal
Steps:
- Elevate the bike (optional): Use a bike stand or jack to lift the wheel off the ground for easier access.
- Remove the wheel: use a wrench to loosen axle nuts and remove them before taking the wheel off.
- Deflate the tire: Press the valve to fully release any air remaining in the inner tube.
- Uninstall the tire form the rim: Use a tire lever to carefully pry one side of the tire away from the rim. Work your way around the wheel until the tire is loose enough to be removed from the rim.
- Remove the inner tube from the tire: Pull the inner tube out from the tire, starting by removing the valve stem from the rim.
- Inspect the tire: Check the tire for any signs of damage. If the tire is worn, cracked, or damaged, replace it. If the tire is in good condition and you’re only replacing the tube, skip to the next step.
- Install the tire on the rim: Fit one side of the new tire onto the rim, leaving the other side open to insert the tube.
- Insert the tube into the tire: Place the valve stem through the hole in the rim, and gently tuck the new inner tube into the tire.
- Reinstall the tire on the rim: Use tire levers to carefully push the second side of the tire back onto the rim. Be cautious not to pinch the inner tube between the tire and the rim.
- Check tire alignment: Ensure the tire is evenly seated and centered on the rim.
